Haunting Darkness

As I went to sleep that night, there was a feeling of dread in my mind. I refused the superstitious nonsense most people believed in, the Day of the Vara was just a good time to dress up as a monster and get candy, as a kid. I mean, who would believe in such things? Creepy teddy bears? Bah!

Looking through the windows of my apartment in Adira Falls down to ArcCorp, the mega-city planet that never sleeps, gave me peace. So I fell asleep eventually and shrugged off the odd feeling that crept over me.

An overly surreal nightmare took over my sleep, which took me to a thrift shop I’d just passed on my route home after having a few drinks with Grim. It was unbelievably real. I looked at the world as they were passing by the store, unbeknownst that a teddy bear was staring back at them. I looked at my fluffy bear hands for a few moments and stood up. Rage and madness took over my mind, someone had to suffer tonight.

In the dark alleys of Area 18, nobody saw a small teddy bear walking on its own. My button eyes fell on a drunk man barely able to walk straight, heading through a gangway to a dark alley. My little teddy legs took me along the same path, while a blinding rage grew stronger and stronger, taking over every sense I had.

The drunk man had fallen on a dirty couch abandoned in the streets at the end of the dark alley and opened a bottle of liquor. He could barely see what was in front of him.

He smiled at the teddy on the couch right next to him, stroking its head gently. The man’s hair was full of ice, eyebrows turned white and eyes turned glassy.

The morning after they found him frozen stiff on the couch with a look of horror forever imprinted on his face. I saw the scene from afar as I headed outside to get the newspaper and a cold shiver ran down my spine. The bear… I… had killed him.
